¡Hay mi madre! My feed has had a lot of DR content lately so starting this post out with this expression is probably not very Mexi-Vocabulario… but language has a way of seeping into your psyche and subconscious. Today’s word is not the exception – and if you speak any level of Spanish you probably have heard this one at one point or another – ¡Comadre!
As in friend, amiga, amiguis, sister, sister-in-law, cousin, auntie, or the more contextually correct: godmother of your child or your special occasion. Yes, even someone who made a straightforward contribution to your wedding or quinceañera can be denoted as your comadre henceforth.
In the real world, you might find the women around you using this word (or the men using its counterpart compadre) doing so much more loosely. Without the formal complexities.
It can also be used as an active verb. Comadreando. Which means to chit chat, gossip, or hang out with your friends. Always having a good time and no, gossip does not actually have to be a part of the equation if you choose to keep your comadreandoing less toxic. Whatever your choice, know this playful and versatile mexi-vocabulario word is one that is quite universal in the Spanish language.
So whether you’re speaking to a Mexican national or to someone from anywhere else in Latin America or Spain, chances are they will understand the usage of this word completely.
