We love getting together. With friends. With family. With good people, as often as possible. It’s something that was probably passed down to us from our parents and their parents before them, and so forth. There really are few things in life that are as enjoyable and relaxing as just hanging out. Shooting the breeze as we’d say in Texas.

And well, if you’re going to be shooting the breeze you might as well enjoy a good meal and something refreshing to drink. For us that’s usually fajitas, at least 10 to 12 side dishes (we’re serious about our meals y’all), and on a good weekend, Micheladas.

It’s Michelada time somewhere in the world

Yeah, I said Micheladas.

They’re so good and I like making mine with Clamato. For this post I picked up the 64-ounce Clamato in the juice aisle at Walmart, as well as some cheese sticks from the Walmart Deli. I decided to make a simple side so my Michelada can be the real star of this story! I’m making a side of cheese sticks with salsa mexicana. We always have tons of salsa mexicana at every family gathering so it literally is the easiest side dish you can make.

Now if for some odd reason you’re not sure what a Michelada is, it is basically a tomato clam juice and beer drink. I know you wouldn’t think this is the most logical pairing, but it is actually very good. So much so that National Michelada Day is on July 12!

You can get pretty creative dressing up your Michelada, but the two ingredients you have to have are clam juice and beer. I like mine with chile powder on the rim, a stick of cucumber in my cup, and a little kick of hot sauce and English sauce in my drink.

Here’s how I made my Michelada!

INGREDIENTS

  • Clamato juice
  • Beer of choice
  • Chile powder to taste
  • Lemon or lime to taste
  • Hot sauce
  • English sauce
  • Cucumber
  • Ice

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Chill a cup or a mug until cool in your freezer
  • Take your chilled cup or mug and squeeze a lime or lemon along the rim
  • Pour your chile powder in a plate in the shape of a ring
  • Turn your chilled cup or mug upside down and place it on the plate with chile powder until the rim of the cup or mug is covered in chile powder
  • Fill your cup or mug halfway or two thirds of the way with Clamato
  • Add a few drops of hot sauce
  • Add a few drops of English sauce
  • Squeeze half a lemon or lime into the Clamato mixture
  • Add as much or as little ice as you would like
  • Fill the rest of your cup or mug with beer
  • Add a stick of cucumber and stir (leave it in as a garnish as well)

That’s literally all. Then drink and enjoy! Oh yeah, and if you have those cheese sticks and Mexican salsa nearby grab them and savor the spicy taste of success.

Making Mexican salsa is pretty simple too. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Two tomatillos
  • One or two tomatoes
  • Six to seven jalapeno peppers
  • Salt

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan add 3 quarts of water
  • Add tomatillos, jalapeno peppers and tomatoes
  • Bring water to a boil
  • Remove tomatillos, tomatoes and jalapeno peppers, and place them in a blender
  • Add a cup of water from the saucepan to the blender
  • Add salt to taste to the blender
  • Blend on high until all ingredients are mixed together
  • Empty contents of blender and serve

You’re now ready to indulge in one very tasty snack!
