Because Loteria + Selena is amazing!

Came across this little beauty a few days ago and pretty much have been in love with the concept ever since! Who doesn’t love playing loteria? And playing Selena-themed loteria in Texas, well you might as well just put a fork in me because I’m done! ūüôā ¬ŅApoco no?¬†And check out all the individual cards on their own – the bustier, la pizza, Los Dinos, el traje, el chico del apartamento 512, la flor, the washing machine… these are all super amazing!!

Whoever came up with this concept deserves ¡el premio mayor!

Do you agree?

Dress up for Halloween: “Anything for Salinas!”

Bidi bidi bom bom. Need we say more? We’re Tejanos and we’re die hard fans of the late and great Selena Quintanilla Perez. Of course she was going to be a part of Anjelica’s DIY looks for Halloween.

Obvio.¬†In the most respectful way possible. We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we have. The proof is in the pudding. Just check out the video below!

Bidi bidi bidi bidi bom bom!

Yes I did. An homage to #Selena while I still had the look. Enjoy.

Is the long awaited Selena emoji finally almost here?

Maybe. Well that’s been the speculation so far at least, ever since the developers of the “TexMoji” app announced recently they are introducing the first ever Texas-themed emojis, in about a month. Expected to cost about $1 per download on itunes, the new app will feature popular Texas personalities and things, including Willie Nelson, Shiner Bock, Blue Bell, Whataburger and Dr. Pepper.

A taco is also rumored to be included in the first 100 emojis to be released on the app.

The inclusion of Texas superstar Selena Quintanilla Perez in this first batch of emoticons has not been confirmed by the developers yet, but it would seem a Texas-themed emoji app without her would be incomplete. Just saying.

Here’s one rendition we found online that kind of rocks!

Jennifer Lopez on Selena

This interview pretty much sums it up. It’s very hard to believe it’s been two decades since Selena‘s tragic departure in 1995. In fact this March 31st will mark the 20th anniversary of her passing.

Latina magazine caught up with Jennifer Lopez and asked her about the upcoming anniversary of the Tejano legend who she so famously portrayed in the biopic about her life. That was also the film that propelled JLo into stardom. Her response was very much on point:

“It was such an important time in my life and movie in my life. Not so much because I got to play her role, but because I got to learn about her, and I feel like it taught me so much to play her at that time in my career. How to navigate through this business, with a lot of laughter and a lot of heart.”

Great answer, Jenny from the Block!

Ay, Kim K!

This one is just for fun. Everyone made such a big deal about la loca de Kim Kardashian the other day that I couldn’t help but to poke a little fun myself. The first thing that came to mind, of course, was what would Selena have to say about this? So here you have it, my interpretation of her reaction:

Ay, Kim K!

Edgar Chose Selena Quintanilla Perez For His Social Studies Project: We’ve Got Material For That!

selena quintanilla perez social studies project juanofwords

Se los prometo that he made the selection entirely on his own! ¬†En serio. ¬†For reals. ¬†No, but like for reals. ¬†Yesterday when I got home the first thing Edgar told me when I got off the truck was “guess who I picked for my social studies project?” ¬†I was a little confused and wasn’t entirely sure what he was talking about. ¬†“Selena. ¬†Selena Perez! ¬†I picked Selena Perez,” he shouted excitedly smiling and looking directly at me to evaluate my reaction.

“You mean Selena Quintanilla Perez,” I responded slyly.

“I know… I forgot the Quintanilla part when I put her name down on the sheet,” he responded.

I’m not even gonna try to front. ¬†My immediate reaction – ya saben in my panzota¬†– was excitement! ¬†Immediately I thought about how relieved I was that he had not said Selena Gomez instead. ¬†Y’all know what I’m talking about. ¬†There are actually kiddos walking around right now thinking that Selena Gomez is the biggest Selena there ever was. ¬†That’s just wrong!

“Selena was named after Selena Quintanilla Perez, mijito!” ¬†That’s always my reaction to such an offense. ¬†The kids just kind of stare at me blankly like “what?…”

My brain started working, and churning, y dando vueltas y vueltas. ¬†“I interviewed her widower last year,” I bragged to Edgar. ¬†He didn’t really understand the significance of that. ¬†Later on Anjelica told me too who Edgar had selected for his school project.

“You have that Selena doll,” she says to me. ¬†It’s true I do. ¬†It’s a collector’s item. ¬†Don’t laugh at me! ¬†“He can take it to school…”

“NOOOOOOO!!!!! Not my Selena doll,” I yell. ¬†Then I kind of embarrassingly retract and explain more calmly and “logically” why there ain’t no chance in hell my Selena doll is walking out of the house and into a school full of curious and careless huercos! ¬†Who knows what those kids would do to my 17 year old Selena doll that’s still neatly stored away in her original box. ¬†I also have tons of magazines from when she first passed away that I collected.

ADM!  I am ridiculous!

Oh well, at least Edgar knows Bidi Bidi Bom Bom has absolutely nothing to do with Selena Gomez!

Now to make his social studies project Reina del Tex-Mex worthy!

Quintanilla Family Approves of ‘To Selena, With Love’

The Quintanilla family.

Remember a couple of months ago I told you about Chris Perez’s new book, To Selena, With Love? ¬†Well, since then it has been all over the news and apparently it is selling quite well tambi√©n. ¬†But, for me, what still was kind of a topic of curiosity, more than anything else, was just exactly how Selena’s family actually felt about the book. ¬†Last week, at the Billboard Latin Music Awards I had the chance to interview A.B. Quintalla and asked him precisely that: how does the family feel about Chris Perez’s new book? ¬†I also asked about how he felt about the tribute to Selena at the awards show. ¬†Here’s what he had to say:

Lady Gaga Gives Props to Late Tejano Queen Selena

At least it appears that way.  Unless the Queen of Little Monsters around the world Рyes Lady Gaga herself, she with the 22-million-plus Twitter followers Рmeant the other now also very famous Selena.  The not so little anymore Selena Gomez.

Whom coincidentally, in fact, was named after the slain Reina del Tex Mex.  Yes folks!  Either way, all roads lead back to Selena Quintanilla Perez.

Lady Gaga is a fan of Selena it seems.

It appears Lady Gaga might do “anything for Salinas!” as well.¬† Her tweet this week very simply stated: Leaving for Korea in less than a week!!!! ¬†Wearing my favorite t shirt today. ¬†It might be the raddest ever. ¬†The below picture accompanied the tweet.

This is the t shirt in question. Pretty cool!

Which Selena she was talking about, the Born This Way songstress did not specify, but I’d bet good money Lady Gaga was talking about our Tejano Queen in that tweet. ¬†That deserves an ¬°Ajua!

Good for you Lady Gaga!

A big thanks to my friend Mariluz for turning me on to this tweet.
