10 Worthy Quotes from Salma Hayek

10 Worthy Quotes from Salma Hayek

Infamous for her beauty.  Acclaimed for her talent.  Salma Hayek first burst into the Hollywood scene before being Latino was the new mainstream.  From her early days in Mexican telenovelas, to her cameos in her first network success, Ugly Betty, to the Oscar nod she received for Frida, Hayek has sort of come full circle, proving as she might say, that a Mexican actress can do whatever she sets her heart and mind to.  Along the way she’s also given us some pretty wise words to contemplate.

Here are just a few worthy quotes from the Mexican thespian:

10. “Before you do anything, think. If you do something to try and impress someone, to be loved, accepted or even to get someone’s attention, stop and think. So many people are busy trying to create an image, they die in the process.”

9. “Life is tough, and if you have the ability to laugh at it you have the ability to enjoy it.”

8. “People often say that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder,’ and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves.”

7. “It’s very easy to feel someone’s pain when you love them.”

6. “I keep waiting to meet a man who has more balls than I do.”

5. “If I go on a diet and work out, I’m always in a bad mood. I’d rather be a little heavier but nice.”

4. “I love being a wife and homemaker – because it’s my choice. My husband doesn’t expect me to do it. I don’t mind doing things for him because he does so much for me; we both feel that way so there is no power struggle.”

3. “No woman has to be a victim of physical abuse. Women have to feel like they are not alone.”

2. “I do have a Mexican accent, but that doesn’t mean that I’m a Latin vamp.”

1. “When they told me I (might win), I was asked to tape a message saying thank you. But the thing is, this particular award isn’t televised. Now, believe me, I am so grateful they acknowledge all of our great Latin performers, but I refused to tape the acknowledgement. If we Latins are not worth their time on television, why should they be worth mine? I think we deserve better than that, so I told them I wouldn’t participate.”

Good for Salma Hayek! Kudos to her for Standing Up to MTV

I’m kind of proud of our mexicana Salma Hayek today for refusing to pre-record a video acceptance speech for April’s MTV Movie Awards. She was nominated for the category of Best Latin Actor for her role in Savages, but refused to record an acceptance speech just in case she would have won when she found out the category of Best Latin Actor wouldn’t be televised at all.

Instead it would be live during commercial breaks and announced during the show as another award that was given out during the night.

This was her explanation to InStyle Magazine of her decision:

“When they told me I (might win), I was asked to tape a message saying thank you. But the thing is, this particular award isn’t televised. Now, believe me, I am so grateful they acknowledge all of our great Latin performers, but I refused to tape the acknowledgement. If we Latins are not worth their time on television, why should they be worth mine? I think we deserve better than that, so I told them I wouldn’t participate.”

¡Así se habla! Good for you Salma for standing up for all Latinos! We do deserve better.

In the end Javier Bardem won the category, but he was not in attendance at the awards show.

10 Celebs Whose Accents We Can’t Get Enough Of!

Once upon a time, accents weren’t cool.  I know, can you believe that?!  Nowadays, it seems some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry belong to Latino stars with varying degrees of thick to thicker accents.   Some would argue the accent is sexy.  That it gives these Latino stars an extra allure.  But sometimes, as in the case of Sofia Vergara, an accent can just be down right hilarious.  And why not admit it, at times, some of these accents can also be pretty hard to understand.  I can remember several episodes of Dancing With The Stars where I didn’t have a clue what William Levy was trying to say.  Pero, whatever the case, what’s true about these 10 Latino Celebrities is that they wear their acentos with lots of orgullo and that’s what makes them so cool!  These are 10 Celebs whose accents we can’t get enough of:

Salma Hayek: The original accent!  Well, I can’t say that’s true… but Salma was definitely a pioneer in making accents mainstream.  Her movie, Fools Rush In is a classic!

Demián Bichir: Honestly, Demián’s accent is not very pronounced, but his stellar performance in A Better Life has made him quite the star to watch.

Kate Del Castillo: Whether in English or Spanish, Kate’s fans just can’t get enough of her.  There’s a frenzy of protest going on right now to anyone else other than the Mexican actress playing Teresa Mendoza in the sequel to La Reina Del Sur.

Guillermo: And finally, Guillermo… from Jimmy Kimmel Live, in case you’re wondering.  The security guard turned on air personality is hilarious as Kimmel’s nightly side kick, and proudly showcases his Latino roots on the nightly show.

Salma, Sofia, JLo, Christina, Eva & Eva – Yeah, They’re All Nominated for ALMA Awards

Nombre, you’re better off asking who’s not nominated?  I kid, LOL!  Pero fijense nomás, if you were to ask that question I’d have to say folks like America Ferrera and Rosario Dawson who haven’t been in the limelight very much this year at all.  Those folks are probably the only Latinos in the entertainment industry who haven’t been nominated for this year’s ALMA Awards, put together by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) annually.

NCLR Alma Awards 2012

Digo, don’t get me wrong.  I think it’s great that por lo menos NCLR recognizes the talent of our own raza, no pun intended, but it’s not everyday we get to see so many of our artists and entertainers being nominated… well, for pretty much anything.  Mucho menos que ganen.  In this case, any way you cut it, no matter who wins or loses, several of our famosos are walking away with trophies.  You gotta like them odds!

Which brings us to the other part of this post.  This year, the ALMA Awards, which will be aired Friday, September 21, 2012 at 8/7 C on NBC, will be awarded to winners “with your votes in mind.”  What does that mean?  Pues, that if you want to, you can vote for your favorite artist in their respective category, daily, every day, from now until online voting closes on September 7, 2012.  If you’re interested Vote Here.

If you just want to know who’s nominated for what – it’s okay, yo también soy bien metiche – here’s the full list of nominados:
