¡Pásame el Pan… Pan Bien Mexicano!

Got a sweet tooth?  Get ready to eat your heart out!  First things first, I am a sucker for pan dulce – just thought it would be appropriate to make that disclaimer.  My favorite is the one that’s just sweet enough.  Not too sweet.  Not too flavorless.  Unless it’s bolillo bread then all bets are off.  Bolillo bread is like an open canvas, ready to be transformed into whatever tasty goodness your pancita desires.  Think tortas de jamón, fajita, pollo, or just big chunks of this bread dunked into a hot cup of café con leche mmm, ya me dio hambre.  But I digress.

The other day we found this panadería called El Boillo Bakery about 20 minutes from our house.  We’d seen it before, but had never stopped.  This time, though, our appetite got the better of us.  It must have been cold or raining.  That is the perfect weather for Mexican sweet bread.  Either way, here’s what ja-pen!

El Bolillo Bakery

El Bolillo Bakery is pretty intimate.  I don’t know if it’s a major chain, but they do have a couple of different locations here in town.  They’re always busy, but never crowded… at least the few times we’ve been to this particular location it’s always been pretty painless.

That's how I like it! ¡Pan bien mexicano!

¡Miren nomás!  Just what the doctor ordered… or in this case, the Juan!

Y acá... so much goodness in there!

We haven’t tried those cakes yet, but don’t they look good?  ¡Qué bueno que ya vienen los cumpleaños de febrero!

Ya que estabamos ahí, ¿pos qué más?

So, of course, before you know it there I am greedily stocking my platter with as much bread as it can carry.  ¡No me disrtraigas, Anjelica!  I’m a little busy here!

Personal size tres leches cake.

Nom… personal-sized tres leches cakes!  Scratch waiting for the birthdays.

Tell me those cookies don't look good!

Cookies like these are too sweet for my taste, but perfect for the kids.  Girl Scout cookies, who needs them?  These are much cheaper too!

La Abuelita Chocolate Machine - Score!!!

Okei… a little confession here.  When I saw this Chocolate La Abuelita machine – yes, I said machine, like automated y toda la cosa – I literally gasped!

“Look!  It’s an Abuelita hot chocolate machine!!”

For Valentine's Day too, eh!

These heart cookies are a little early, but they did catch our eye.  ¡Qué romantic!

Gracias por su preferencia.

I can’t remember the last last time somebody thanked me for my preferencia.

Calling this one the Ballet Folklorico Mural.

Anjelica really liked all of the murals on the ceilings.  I hadn’t even noticed them.  Les digo, siempre ando bien distraido.

Chocolate covered strawberries and wedding cake!

Finally, this one is just for your enjoyment.  I don’t know about you, but I’ll take pan dulce and La Abuelita hot chocolate over anything they sell at Starbucks any day!

  1. WOW. I’ve never been in such a fantastic Mexican bakery. The ones we have here are typically small store fronts with a few cases, no decoration besides local flyers on a bulletin board, air conditioning not even turned on LOL. That place is beautiful! The murals! The Abuelita machine! The Valentine cookies in Spanish! … perhaps it’s good for my waistline that we don’t have anything that fantastic around here.

I like bolillos too – the smell of fresh bread is one of my favorites. As for the sweets, I used to prefer the marranitos but overtime I’ve come to prefer conchas and those cookies with the colorful sprinkles.

And that’s just Mexican breads. I have a half dozen Salvadoran favorites too, of course 😉

    1. Oh there are some yummy Salvadoran breads too, mmmm… nom! Wow… that makes me a little sad that there aren’t any sweet bread joints like these up there. Don’t know if I could survive like that, LOL! Nombre that’s why I always say we have everything here in Texas. O como quien dice, everything is bigger in Texas! jajaja 🙂

  2. This kind of cruelty should be punished! 😀 There is nothing close to those Mexican delicacies around mi rancho… not even pan Bimbo! Yes, I know, nobody forced me to move to the Cape, yes? :D. Thanks for the photos, Juan. They make me hungry too.

  3. Well, I didn’t want to be the one to say it, Judy… but, LOL! Just kidding! So glad you enjoyed the pictures. Those personal-sized tres leches cakes are calling my name this morning!

  4. omg—ke changos…. i am in love… that’s like Pan Heaven for a panderera like me…okay panderea is not a real word I was going for a cinderella type name and that came out… omg tres leches… I love pan… and im preggo… and i want to eat it all… y do u keep posting all these amazing mercados?!!! I must move to houston!!!

    1. Nombre, Nikkeya… Texas would love to have you let me tell you! How many months are you? Hope these pictures did not inspire any cravings… we need to look into mailing pan dulce after all the response from this post, changos jajaja!

  5. Absolutely delectable and beautiful! I’m so jealous, Juan. That Abuelita chocolate dispenser is something else. You’d never get me out of that place. Bolillo con chocolate … ay. *lol* Great post and photos. : D

    1. Gracias, Ezzy! It’s literally all I have been thinking about lately. We might need to move closer to this place, though, they are building one like five minutes away from our current home! So much for the New Year’s resolution, jajaja!

  6. Everything looks delicious! Reminds me of my childhood (I grew up in El Paso and we had a bakery right near my house – I grew up on this stuff!)

    1. Melissa, we grew up with no panaderias where we lived, at least none that we could get to easily, so finding places like these is always a real treat for me. The panaderias in Mexico were especially good! Que rico 🙂
